Afghanistan - Sangin

1. SITUATION:

1st Platoon will be performing IED clearance, intelligence gathering, providing security and conducting counter insurgency operations in the Area. The continuation of hearts & minds patrols, recce, presence & fighting patrols will be a key part of the operation.

 

a. 2006s - Rules of Engagement

On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions:

  1. Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. PID is a reasonable certainty that the proposed target is a legitimate military target. If no PID, contact your next highest commander for decision.
  2. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded. 
  3. Any requests for fire support or close air support within 600 Meters of a civilian center must first get authorization from commanding officer. 

2. MISSION

 

- 1st Platoon Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment is to continue conducting Hearts & Minds patrols in the vicinity of FOB Alamo. In-addition, we will be conducting IED Clearance patrols due to the increased IED presences. At 0700, 1st Platoon will mount up in Vehicles and move north and get eyes on VCP Alpha once more to determine its status after last weeks firefight. 1st Platoon will RTB, and begin acting upon the intel it has gathered throughout the mission.

 

3. EXECUTION

PHASE I - Insertion

 

a. At 0545 IGT 1st Platoon will begin operations.

b. At 0600, 1st Squad will begin to fortify FOB Alamo and set up ARC's of fire, and stay on standbye as QRF for 2nd Squad. At 0600, 2nd Squad will begin conducting hearts and minds patrols in the immediate vicinity of FOB Alamo.

 

 

PHASE II - Hearts & Minds Patrols & IED Clearance

 

a. 2nd Squad will depart FOB Alamo from the eastern gate, move northeast, move to the Afghan Police Station, check in with the Local Police Chief and gather intel. 2nd Squad will also conduct IED Clearance Operations along Route Gold, then return to FOB Alamo by 0620 ZST.

b. At 0620, 1st Squad will wait for 2nd Squad to arrive. Then 1st Squad will begin Patrol operations. 1st Squad will move out of FOB Alamo to the west, and conduct patrols in the mountain villages. 1st Squad will also conduct IED Clearance operations along Route Red. 1st Squad will RTB at 0640.

c. At 0640, 2nd Squad will wait for 1st Squad to arrive. Then 2nd squad will push out to the east, follow route magenta north, cutting across the river to route yellow following it south, then RTB once reaching Hill 2004.

d. At 7000, 1st Platoon will resupply and prepare to conduct a mounted patrol north to VCP Alpha.

PHASE III - VCP Alpha

a. 1st Platoon will finish all foot patrols and return to base.

b. 1st Platoon will mount up in vehicles and move north along Route Red for Two Clicks, then cross off country and pick up Route Gold. 

c. 1st Platoon will then move north for 1 Click along Route Gold until we reach VCP Alpha. 

d. 1st Platoon will dismount and set up integrated security in VCP Alpha while Platoon Leader collects intel.

PHASE IV - Recon

a. After speaking with friendly forces at VCP Alpha and locals, 1st Platoon will conduct recon in an attempt to confirm any possible Taliban sources of the increased IED threat in the immediate vicinity of FOB Alamo.

b. Detailed plan cannot be given at this time, and will be conducted on the fly after receiving Intel.

 

PHASE V - ENDEX

a. After completing all objectives, 1st Platoon will return to FOB Alamo for ENDEX.

 

 

 

**Special Instructions**

- All requests for fire will come to the Platoon Leader first.

- Reinserts will not be Via teleport. Be very careful. If you die, Reinserts will be done via helicopter, and will take some time.

- We will be fighting in Urban terrain. Take it slow, be methodical, and work with closely with fellow units.

- IED's will be present, if an IED is present without an ambush element, establish security with a 50-100 meter radius around the IED. Clear all civilians, radio command with grid coordinates of IED and wait for engineers to arrive.

- If an IED is present in an Ambush situation, break contact in a controlled manner, radio for QRF, and assess the situation. If it is possible to maneuver and push into the ambushing force's flank, due so. If you are heavily outnumbered and unable to achieve fire superiority, fall back to a hard point and await arrival of QRF.

6. COMMANDER'S NOTES

 

TEAM LEADERS, First, make sure your men pack extra frags & make sure one person in your squad is bringing explosives. Better to raise hardpoints rather than to lose multiple men while clearing it.
