Operation Ivory Coast 001

North Vietnam - Son Tay

1. REGION: Son Tay, North Vietnam

2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 112F (32C); Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0515 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT

3. TERRAIN: Mountainous, Double Canopy Rain Forest

After extended long range air reconnaissance and close reconnaissance by MACV-SOG it has developed that a Prison Camp held by the NVA is holding multiple US POW's. The camp is heavily defended and has multiple defensive units. There is also a QRF and Reinforcements within 15 minutes of the prison camp, they have been seen to do practice runs on reaction times and have well thought out patrol and infil routes. It is not known to exact location in the camp where the POW's are been held, but recon last week spotted a heavy NVA presence and movement of US POW's around the camp. NVA troops are known to use Route 305 as the infil and exfil route to the camp. This is heavily defended with checkpoints on either side.

1st Platoon's job will be to covertly insert into the prison camp, rescue our POW's and exfil. A small element of 1 Platoon should also be ready to defend the exfil party from the QRF forces, or take the fight to the QRF and disable them before they can react to the rescue of our POW's.

Rattler Elements will be tasked with inserting & supporting 1st Platoon, while additionally providing rescue capabilities, medevac and resupply if needed. CAS may also be required to dampen the QRF and Reinforcements.

a. 1970s - Rules of Engagement

On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions:

  1. Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. PID is a reasonable certainty that the proposed target is a legitimate military target. If no PID, contact your next highest commander for decision.
  2. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded.
  3. Any requests for fire support or close air support within 600 Meters of a civilian center must first get authorization from commanding officer.

- Rattler Elements will ferry 1st Platoon into Landing Zone (LZ) Able at 1930 EST. From there 1st Platoon will push south & split off at Rally point 2 (RP 2) just 100 meters north of Route 305. From there each squad will move their respective Observation Points & recce OBJ George. At 2000 EST, 1st Platoon will begin their assault on OBJ George, simultaneously as 1st Platoon, 71st AHC begins gun runs on OBJ Edward. From there 1st Platoon will clear OBJ George & move to engage enemy QRF Forces before they reach OBJ George. POW's will be extracted & 1st Platoon will disperse into the Jungle for extract.

PHASE I - Insertion

a. At 1900 Zulu Time, 1st Platoon will load into the server.

b. At 1930 Zulu Time, 1st Platoon, 71st AHC will ferry 1st Platoon, A. Co, 1/7th Cav into LZ Able

c. At 1940, 1st Platoon, A. Co, 1/7th Cav will begin moving south to RP 2.

d. At RP2, 2nd Squad will move south and cross Route 305, and move to WP2. From there 2nd Squad will move to OP 1 & begin recce on OBJ George.

e. At RP2, 1st Squad will move west to WP 1, from there push south to OP 3, and begin to recce OBJ George.

f. At 1940, 1st Platoon, 71st AHC will load into the Rotary/Fixed Wing assets of their choosing and begin loitering at a distance of 3km from OBJ Edward

PHASE II - Assault

a. 1st Platoon, 71st AHC & 1st Platoon, A. Co, 1/7th Cav will commence a synchronized assault on OBJ's George & Edward.

b. 1st Platoon, 71st AHC will bomb OBJ Edward, in an attempt to delay neutralize the motorized NVA reinforcing group.

c. 1st Squad will provide overwatch as 2nd Squad moves in to clear Zones 2 & 3.

c. 2nd Squad will then move to clear Zone 1. Once Zone's 1, 2, & 3 are cleared, 2nd Squad will move to secure POW's in Zone 4, as 1st Squad moves west along Route 305 to begin mining the western approach to OBJ George.

d. 2nd Squad will begin stablizing rescued POW's & moving them east to LZ Powers.

e. 1st Squad will move west and set up an ambush for the NVA Quick Reaction Force & delay them as long as possible, while 2nd Squad begins extracting POW's.

PHASE III - Defense & Delay

a. Rattler Elements will land at LZ Powers to begin extracting POW's, while 1st & 2nd Squads provide security.

b. 1st Squad will delay NVA QRF Forces as long as possible, and if necessary begin falling back into defensive positions on the northwestern side of OBJ George. 2nd Squad will split their force, one half will move POW's to the LZ, while the other half digs in on the Southwestern side of OBJ George. Expect large numbers of POW's so extraction may take several trips.

c. HQ Element (Mako 1-6) Will begin to gather intelligence in OBJ George.

d. A Large motorized force is expected to be moving from OBJ Edward to the AO, as such once the POW's and intel are extracted, 1st Platoon will begin falling back east into the Jungle to either LZ Prior, LZ Able, or LZ Donovan.

PHASE IV - Extraction

a. 1st Platoon will move to either of the three LZ's, establish a perimeter and wait for extract.

b. If 1st Platoon is heavily perused, 1st Platoon will continue east & utilize Jungle Canopy Harnesses for extraction.

a. All squads will return to Camp for Endex.

**Special Instructions**

- All requests for fire will come to the Platoon Leader first.

- Reinserts will not be Via teleport. Be very careful. If you die, Reinserts will be done via helicopter, and will take some time.

- We will be running medevacs. All personnel are to carry 1 Personal Aid Kit (PAK) on them. If they are wounded they get one chance to be PAK'd in the field, after that, if wounded a second time, that soldier is to be medevac'd to a medical facility.
