SSG A. REGION: Kunduz, Afghanistan 2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 38F ; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0415 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT 3. TERRAIN: Mountains, Arid In 2014 NATO and ISAF troops started their final push deep into the northern territories of Afghanistan. This one was final ditch effort to remove the Taliban from power and cease their operations in the North. This push would prove to be some of the hardest fighting ISAF troops had engaged in since their initial deployment in late 2001. The Taliban, although weaker than ever before still had a substantial force based in the North. ISAF troops knew this and sent every available force into the region. The US supported by the British moved into Kunduz, a known Taliban stronghold and scattered with IED factories and ammo caches. The local elders had supported the Taliban's efforts to keep the north under their control. This proved to be a key factor in the ferociousness of the fighting. The US forces formed 2 FOB's in the area, each manned by a platoon of combat troops and attachments of USAF and British Royal Marines. In their initial patrols the area seemed quiet with no fighting and locals seemed welcoming to their presence. However, over the coming weeks this dramatically changed and fighting was occuring on an hourly basis. Both FOB's took IDF, RPG's and VBIED attacks daily. With Camp Bastion airbase and Kandahar airbase been over 2 hours flight time away for fast air, they rarely had any support and supplies were scarce. a. Enemy Disposition Heavy Disposition of Taliban Fighters Well equipped foreign fighters trained in Pakistan Anti-Air, Mortar, and Rocket emplacements IED's and VBIEDS are common in the area. b. Friendly Disposition ~ 2 Platoons of British Royal Marines Highly skilled in combat Manning x2 British FOB's in the area Able to provide mortar cover. c. 2000s - Rules of Engagement On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions: Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded. Any requests for fire support or close air support within 600 Meters of a civilian center must first get authorization from commanding officer. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Maps of the Province: Area of Operations Kar Shek Chahar Dara Surrounding Village Notes from Commander: All requests for Close Air Support/Medevac/Resupply/Insertion are to go to Mako 1-6 on FREQ 60.0.
