SITUATION

OPERATION TIME: 1900 EST

IN-GAME TIME: 1200 IGT

ORGANIZATION:

1. REGION: Song Be, South Vietnam

2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 38F ; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0415 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT

3. TERRAIN: Mountains, Highlands, Jungle, Rolling plains

Our job is to mop up the Viet Cong Irregulars who control the countryside, so that the division can move on to assist friendly forces besieged in Saigon. The Battalion commander intends to deny the Viet Cong the ability to survive and sustain operations in the valley. He has formulated a two part plan. 1. Deny the Viet Cong of their food supply 2. Deny them of their ammunition stores.

1: Since the surprise attack, we have lost the countryside to the Vietcong. The ARVN outpost in Dak Poi was overrun long ago & base security has only been able to patrol the Village of Dak Pek just outside the camp's perimeter. Three large villages along the Dak Pek river, to the south of Camp Sheridan, are believed to shelter, house, or at least supply the Viet Cong with food. We will deny the VC the ability to gather food and take shelter with the locals, by burning these three villages & concentrating the villagers in Dak Poi. We will search all three villages. If evidence of Viet Cong activity is found, the villagers are to be arrested and flown back to Camp Sheridan for interrogation and the village is to be burnt. If evidence of Viet Cong activity is not found, gather up the locals, tell them to take all of their valuables, and travel north to the Village of Dak Pek, then the village is to be burnt.

2: When 1st Platoon secured Hill 440, a radio operator was taken prisoner who was able to provide valuable information on a Viet Cong supply depot in the valley. We do not know its exact location; however, records he provided indicates that a VC tunnel network exists in the vicinity of Hill 581. We also know that it has two entrances, runs clear through to the other side of Hill 581, and is believed to hold vast stockpiles of ammunition. After searching & burning all three villages, 1st Platoon will search for the tunnel entrance. Once located, 1st Platoon will enter and clear the tunnel. 1st Platoon will locate ammunition stocks, destroy them, then push through the opposite end of the tunnel.

a. Enemy Disposition

  1. Unknown disposition of Vietcong Irregulars

    1. Large in number but not well equipped

    2. Static Weapons & Light Mortars

    3. Complete control of the countryside

    4. Heavily mined possible US landing zones

b. Friendly Disposition

  1. 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment

    1. In contact with various elements of the 324th Infantry Battalion PAVN

    2. Acting as a blocking force, to keep the PAVN from escaping across the Cambodian border.

c. 1960s - Rules of Engagement

On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions:

  1. Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. PID is a reasonable certainty that the proposed target is a legitimate military target. If no PID, contact your next highest commander for decision.
  2. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded.
  3. Any requests for fire support or close air support within 600 Meters of a civilian center must first get authorization from commanding officer.

Notes from Commander:

  • All requests for Close Air Support/Medevac/Resupply/Insertion are to go to Mako 1-6 on FREQ 60.0. Mako 1-6 will contact Rattler 1-6 on FREQ 50.0 to request an asset to assist 1st Platoon as necessary. Once the asset is in the area of Operation for Mako 1-6, Infantry can contact the bird via CAS Net FREQ 45.0 to guide in the bird/direct close air support.
  • If an infantry element is in threat of being overrun and requires immediate assistance, they may declare a "Tactical Emergency" to Mako 1-6, who will then have Rattler 1-6 redirect all available air assets to Mako 1-6's Area of Operation to prevent the unit from being overrun.
  • Expect the enemy to utilize grenades when in close combat.
  • Bring this in your kit         ITEM - Zippo        if you want to burn the huts
  • When burning a hut make sure to stand back, and let one person burn the hut, as to avoid friendly fire.
