Last Stand At Lang Vei (Part Two) | SOFREP

South Vietnam - I Corps - Quang Tri Province - Khe Sanh - 1967

SITUATION

OPERATION TIME: 1900 EST 5.25.22

ORGANIZATION:

1. REGION: Highlands, Quang Tri, South Vietnam

2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 97F ; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0415 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT

3. TERRAIN: Mountainous

c. 1960s - Rules of Engagement

On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions:

  1. Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. PID is a reasonable certainty that the proposed target is a legitimate military target. If no PID, contact your next highest commander for decision.
  2. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded. 
  3. Any requests for fire support or close air support within 600 Meters of a civilian center must first get authorization from commanding officer. 
  4. Require authorization & PID, before High Explosives are cleared within 200 meters of a village. 

2. MISSION

Last week, American outposts all along the ridge were attacked. While Alpha Company held thier position, other outposts did not fair as well. The Special Forces camp has even come under siege. 1st Platoon and the rest of Alpha Company have been hastily evacuated from FSB Hogan. We have been sent to reinforce Lang Sei SF Camp in face of an impending enemy attack.

3. EXECUTION

PHASE I 

a. At 1930 EST, 1st Platoon will load into the Special Forces Camp.

b. From there 1st Platoon will take up their battle positions on the southern edge of the camp. 

c. We have 4 sections of line to cover. Target Reference Point (TRP 1) through TRP 4. 

d. Each squad will take a static machinegun and recoilless rifle to their battle position.

e. 2nd Squad is Covering Sections 1 & 2 (TRP 1 - TRP 3).

f. 1st Squad is covering Sections 3 & 4 (TRP 3 - 5)

g. Each fireteam within the squad will be assigned a section, and will begin placing claymores along the perimeter for their appropriate section.

h. 1-2 will send out a patrol to scout their Listening Post position (LP1) and begin construction. 

i. 1-1 will send out a patrol to scout their Listening Post position (LP2) and begin construction. 

j. Engagement & Disengagement criteria for LPs:

  • 1: If the LP come across 4 or less men, they are ordered to engage and disrupt the enemy.
  • 2: If the LP Comes across 5 - 10 men, they are ordered to fire a magazine at the enemy & break contact, returning to the Camp.
  • 3: If the LP comes across 10 or more men, they are ordered to go to ground and hide. 
  • 4: LP's are to check in on radio: 1) Once after arriving, 2) Five Minutes in 3) At the 10 minute marker. 
  • 5: LP's are to rotate men every 10 minutes

k. 1-2 will mine with AT Mines, AOA 1. 1-1 will mine AOA 2 with AT Mines.

l. While the LP's are active, units are to hold their fire in their respective sections unless given authorization from 1-6

m. Trigger Lines (TL) have been established in sections across our line, matching visible terrain features, this means to not engage until the enemy has pasted this Trigger Line.
