SITUATION

OPERATION TIME: 1900 EST

IN-GAME TIME: 0500 IGT

ORGANIZATION:

1. REGION: South Vietnam

2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 97F ; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0415 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT

3. TERRAIN: City, Urban, Rice Paddies, Rural

Amidst the chaos of 58 state capitals & dozens of American installations coming under siege in a single night, decision makers had no idea that Hue City had fallen, merely that they had lost communications with all units within the city. As American installations in the vicinity had come under attack, only a small force already operating in the field was able to move to assist & assess the situation in Hue.

Two Companys of Marine Riflemen were conducting route clearance just south of Hue City & were the first American Units sent to investigate & assess the situation. Company A & Company G, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Division, with ~ 3 M48 Patton Tanks were sent to investigate the situation in Hue. Their goals were to retake Highway 1 Bridge over the Truoi River, approach the city, enter the suburbs, figure out why the MACV Camp & ARVN Battalion in Hue stopped responding, whether they had fled the battle or were still fighting in the city.

The only intelligence offered to the Company Commanders of Alpha & Golf Company were that 1). a PAVN force had overrun the ARVN defenders of Highway 1 Bridge, in-between the Marines & Hue. 2). that Hue City had reportedly been attacked the previous day. The Marines walking into Hue had no idea that the city had completely fallen as was now being garrisoned by ~ 4,500 determined & well equipped enemy fighters.

Once they came into sight of the city, both Companies of Marines came under heavy fire from entrenched PAVN & Vietcong forces. The Companies were ordered to push into the suburbs of the city and establish footholds on the outskirts, until reinforcements from the battalion arrived.

Tonight we will be to act as 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1/1 Marines. We are given 1 of the Companies 3 M41 Walker Bulldogs. Our sister Platoons will be pushing along with us into the southern suburbs of Hue capturing their own Objectives.

On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions:

  1. Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. PID is a reasonable certainty that the proposed target is a legitimate military target. If no PID, contact your next highest commander for decision.
  2. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded.
  3. Any requests for fire support or close air support within 600 Meters of a civilian center must first get authorization from commanding officer.
  4. Require authorization & PID, before High Explosives are cleared within 200 meters of a village.

Notes from Commander:

  • All requests for Close Air Support/Medevac/Resupply/Insertion are to go to Mako 1-6 on FREQ 60.0. Mako 1-6 will contact Rattler 1-6 on FREQ 50.0 to request an asset to assist 1st Platoon as necessary. Once the asset is in the area of Operation for Mako 1-6, Infantry can contact the bird via CAS Net FREQ 45.0 to guide in the bird/direct close air support.
  • If an infantry element is in threat of being overrun and requires immediate assistance, they may declare a "Tactical Emergency" to Mako 1-6, who will then have Rattler 1-6 redirect all available air assets to Mako 1-6's Area of Operation to prevent the unit from being overrun.
