South Vietnam - I Corps -  The Hai Lang Forest - October 1967

SITUATION

OPERATION TIME: 1900 EST

IN-GAME TIME: 0500 IGT

ORGANIZATION:

1. REGION: Hai Lang Forest, I Corps, South Vietnam

2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 97F ; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0415 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT

3. TERRAIN: Jungle, Rice Paddies, Rural

The 1st Cavalry Division has been redeployed into I Corps, the northern sector of South Vietnam. Over the last year, the 3rd Marines & ARVN units have ceded the majority of territory in I Corps, to the PAVN. Due to lack of manpower, several key areas have fallen into enemy hands & have begun to fester with reinforcements from the North. The 1st Cavalry Division has been deployed to the area, in an attempt to recapture the Hai Lang Forest, which has been over run by PAVN Regulars. Our intelligence suggests that the 379th Battalion have established a sprawling base camp, and have been using the forest to hide & transport large stashes of arms and munitions, to the units further south & west of them.

1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry has been deployed to the Hai Lang Forest. Alpha Company has landed and begun establishing Camp Striker, on the northern end of the forest. After landing and beginning construction, the company has yet to make direct contact with the enemy; however, Camp Striker has been the target of several Rocket attacks. Intelligence & manpower is limited. While patrols in the immediate vicinity have uncovered nothing but abandoned camps & villages, we know that must be ammunition dumps in the vicinity allowing for the constant resupply & redeployment of PAVN Rocket Artillery tubes.

The strikes have been coming from the west, this is all that we know. The enemy possesses great mobility & have hidden the tubes back in the depths of the forest by the time our air assets drop their ordinance on their last known position.

Our objective will be to sortie outside of the Camp and sweep several nearby villages & the surrounding area in an attempt to locate 1). the PAVN Ammo dumps supplying the rockets, 2). The Rocket Tubes themselves or 3). any PAVN forces operating in the area.

a. Enemy Disposition

  1. PAVN Forces have gone to ground in the area, in the wake of our arrival

    1. Company sized element
    2. Possess Rocket Artillery tubes
    3. Possess Light Anti-Aircraft guns scattered across the countryside

c. 1960s - Rules of Engagement

On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions:

  1. Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. PID is a reasonable certainty that the proposed target is a legitimate military target. If no PID, contact your next highest commander for decision.
  2. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded.
  3. Any requests for fire support or close air support within 600 Meters of a civilian center must first get authorization from commanding officer.
  4. Require authorization & PID, before High Explosives are cleared within 200 meters of a village.

Notes from Commander:

  • All requests for Close Air Support/Medevac/Resupply/Insertion are to go to Mako 1-6 on FREQ 60.0. Mako 1-6 will contact Rattler 1-6 on FREQ 50.0 to request an asset to assist 1st Platoon as necessary. Once the asset is in the area of Operation for Mako 1-6, Infantry can contact the bird via CAS Net FREQ 45.0 to guide in the bird/direct close air support.
  • If an infantry element is in threat of being overrun and requires immediate assistance, they may declare a "Tactical Emergency" to Mako 1-6, who will then have Rattler 1-6 redirect all available air assets to Mako 1-6's Area of Operation to prevent the unit from being overrun.
