Operation Cyclone 001

Afghan-resistance-fighters-village-force

Uzbin Province, Afghanistan 1984

SITUATION

TIME: February 11th, 1984 @ 1900 EST (1200 IGT)

WEATHER: 31F (5C) Overcast; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0600 IGT; Dusk 1800 IGT

As of February 1984, The Soviet Army has control of most of Urban Afghanistan; however, after 5 years of prolonged fighting, stiff resistance has formed in the rural population, who have fled to the mountains and are waging a guerilla war against the Soviet Occupiers. The Soviet Army has established several well guarded "Safe Zones" in the urban areas as they plan to rebuild the communist framework of the nation; however, outside of these Urban Safe Zones, Soviet forces are engaged with a well disciplined advisory, striking from the mountain tops, and the shadows. Soviet Operations consist of patrolling the rural areas, outside of their safe zones, searching for concentrations of Mujahedeen troops, safe houses, arms smugglers, and supply routes. Once located the Soviet Forces utilize their heavy airpower to smash the Mujahedeen rebels from the air.

The Uzbin Valley, in which you live, has come under attack by Mujahedeen forces moving down from the north. Here on the western fringes of the Valley, Soviet Forces have forcibly relocated the inhabitants to Safe Zones Anna and Boris, while the 375th Motor Rifle Regiment engages with Mujahedeen Regulars in the western valley.

Bisecting the Valley from North to south are the tall, rocky Koubal Mountains.

The Eastern side of the Uzbin valley has remained relatively untouched by the war up until this point. With the arrival of Mujahedeen regulars to the west, so have their smugglers and supply lines begun to move arms and muntions through the western half of the province, over the Koubal mountains, to the Eastern Valley, where the battle rages. Safe Zone Dimitry lays in the eastern valley, guarded by Sary Yar Airfield. Soviet Operations have ramped up in Sary Yar Airfield, to locate and destroy these supply lines, in order to cripple the mujahedeen forces to the West. Foot patrols scour the surrounding villages and cities, checkpoints have been established along the roads, and no one has been allowed to travel south to Safe Zone Boris or Anna. The Soviet Forces in Sary Yar, have even begun searching homes & leveling whole villages in the areas that surround safe zone Dimitry, in order to crush the Mujahedeen supply lines.

**Any support for the Mujahedeen from the local population, has been met with brutal repression by the Soviet occupiers.**

Notes from Commander:

  • All requests for Close Air Support/Medevac/Resupply/Insertion are to go to Mako 1-6 on FREQ 60.0. Mako 1-6 will contact Rattler 1-6 on FREQ 50.0 to request an asset to assist 1st Platoon as necessary. Once the asset is in the area of Operation for Mako 1-6, Infantry can contact the bird via CAS Net FREQ 45.0 to guide in the bird/direct close air support.
  • If an infantry element is in threat of being overrun and requires immediate assistance, they may declare a "Tactical Emergency" to Mako 1-6, who will then have Rattler 1-6 redirect all available air assets to Mako 1-6's Area of Operation to prevent the unit from being overrun.
  • Be sure not to stray too far off the planned & assigned path, due to the high probability of undiscovered minefields.
  • Be sure to stay within 1st Platoon's area of operation, venturing off course into 2nd or 3rd Platoon's AO could result in blue on blue.
