    SITUATION

    OPERATION TIME: 1900 EST

    IN-GAME TIME: 1200 IGT

    ORGANIZATION:

    1. REGION: Song Be, South Vietnam

    2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 38F ; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0415 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT

    3. TERRAIN: Mountains, Highlands, Jungle, Rolling plains

Our job is to mop up the Viet Cong Irregulars who control the countryside, so that the division can move on to assist friendly forces besieged in Saigon. The Battalion commander intends to deny the Viet Cong the ability to survive and sustain operations in the valley. He has formulated a two part plan. 1. Deny the Viet Cong of their food supply 2. Deny them of their ammunition stores.

1: Since the surprise attack, we have lost the countryside to the Vietcong. The ARVN outpost in Dak Poi was overrun long ago & base security has only been able to patrol the Village of Dak Pek just outside the camp's perimeter. Three large villages along the Dak Pek river, to the south of Camp Sheridan, are believed to shelter, house, or at least supply the Viet Cong with food. We will deny the VC the ability to gather food and take shelter with the locals, by burning these three villages & concentrating the villagers in Dak Poi. We will search all three villages. If evidence of Viet Cong activity is found, the villagers are to be arrested and flown back to Camp Sheridan for interrogation and the village is to be burnt. If evidence of Viet Cong activity is not found, gather up the locals, tell them to take all of their valuables, and travel north to the Village of Dak Pek, then the village is to be burnt.

2: When 1st Platoon secured Hill 440, a radio operator was taken prisoner who was able to provide valuable information on a Viet Cong supply depot in the valley. We do not know its exact location; however, records he provided indicates that a VC tunnel network exists in the vicinity of Hill 581. We also know that it has two entrances, runs clear through to the other side of Hill 581, and is believed to hold vast stockpiles of ammunition. After searching & burning all three villages, 1st Platoon will search for the tunnel entrance. Once located, 1st Platoon will enter and clear the tunnel. 1st Platoon will locate ammunition stocks, destroy them, then push through the opposite end of the tunnel.

    3. TERRAIN: Mountains, Highlands, Jungle, Rolling plains

Last weekend we took the PAVN's base camp in the valley. This action successfully thwarted Colonel Nguyen's plan to annihilate us, and move on to assist in the battle for Saigon. The 324th PAVN Infantry is making a hasty retreat, north, along Highway 19, in an attempt to get across the Cambodian Border to safety. Bravo, Charlie, and Delta Company have been flown in along the border to act as a blocking force. Mean while, Alpha Company's job is to push north along Highway 19, and attempt to over run the PAVN's rear guard and supply train. Once and if this can be accomplished, Alpha Company will then join in on the attack, and assault the main body of the PAVN force, which is currently engaged up north with Bravo Company.

    a. Enemy Disposition

    1. Battalion sized PAVN Element

      1. Taken substantial casualties.

      2. Static AA was neutralized last weekend, expect only heavy machine guns for Anti-Air.

      3. Small rear guard force, however expect them to be determined to delay you.

      4. Large numbers of vehicles, and equipment attempting to flee back across the border.

      5. Bravo Company reports that they are taking artillery fire from deep within Cambodian territory, so expect enemy artillery support.

    b. Friendly Disposition

    1. 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment

      1. In contact with various elements of the 324th Infantry Battalion PAVN

      2. Acting as a blocking force, to keep the PAVN from escaping across the Cambodian border.

      3. Friendly Forces in AO Cougar, and AO Fox will be pushing North with you, covering your flanks on the valley.

    SITUATION

    OPERATION TIME: 1900 EST

    IN-GAME TIME: 1000 IGT

    ORGANIZATION:

    1. REGION: Song Be, South Vietnam

    2. WEATHER: Clear Skies; 38F ; Wind <1kn NNE; Dawn 0415 IGT; Dusk 1900 IGT

    3. TERRAIN: Mountains, Highlands, Jungle, Rolling plains

Background: In the aftermath of the surprise attack, the 1st Cavalry Division sought to resecure the surrounding area, recover lost fire support bases, and even launch retaliatory strikes on the PAVN occupying the area; however, their efforts were severely hampered by the amount of airframes lost during the surprise attack. The 1st Cavalry Division would assault several key PAVN supply bases, and other fortified positions, pushing them back towards the Cambodian border. These gains would come at a great price. The ever rising number of casualties would eventually render the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, combat ineffective. Seasoned officers, NCOs, many veterans of the Second World War and Korean War, would be bled from their ranks and replaced by draftees and young volunteers. On a greater scale, the first wave of the Tet Offensive would mark the end of the professional soldier in the United States Army in Vietnam, and usher in the era of the draftee. Scholars cannot agree, but somewhere between 55,000-100,000 US troops were taken out of action during the Tet offensive, and sent back to the United States. As a result, the US called for 300,000 draftee's to be trained and fill their places, in an attempt to retake the country and contain the chaos erupting in South Vietnam during this time. The post-Tet US Army is the one that is often portrayed in movies, where drugs, disorder, hippies, and the fragging of fresh junior officers runs rampant. This stereotype is often applied to the US Army as a whole during Vietnam, however the pre-tet US Army was a seasoned machine filled with motivated volunteers, professional soldiers, and veterans of the previous American Wars. As I stated this transition would occur as a result of the heavy casualties taken during the fighting immediately after the first wave of the Tet Offensive from February - March 1968. One more fact to drive home the colossal amount of casualties that combat units took; Nearly twice as many men were killed in the first three months of the Tet offensive, then the entirety of US KIA in 1967.

Situation: A week has passed since we survived the surprise attack on Camp Sheridan. The airfield is in ruin. Many of our outlying listening posts and fire support bases have been completely over run. US forces only control the ground they are standing on, at the current moment. The valley's, villages, mountains, and jungles are controlled by groups of Viet Cong irregulars as well as uniformed PAVN regulars. The 1/7th had located a PAVN Base Camp just several kilometers from Camp Sheridan, atop Hill 440. Close Air support was called to soften up the jungled mountaintop over the period of two days. Then elements of Alpha and Bravo company were flown in to assault and clear the hill. During the night, a PAVN Air-defense company entrenched itself on an adjacent mountain, and inflicted heavy losses on the fixed wing and rotary wing assets attempt to dislodge the enemy on Hill 440. We will begin in the morning, just hours after the failed air assault on Hill 440. Alpha Company has been scattered along the southern side of Hill 440, and taken heavy casualties. There are several birds down in the AO as well. Bravo Company managed to land, however they now have to act as a blocking force to repel a group of PAVN soldiers attempting to relive their comrades encircled on Hill 440. The PAVN have several 155mm Artillery pieces that are hammering Alpha Company who are pinned down nearby Hill 440. Additionally the PAVN Air-defense company is preventing Alpha and Bravo from calling in Medevac or CAS on their positions.

1st Platoon's mission will be to pick an LZ near OBJ Alpha, then hike into the remote mountainous village & neutralize the PAVN Air-Defense Company & attached Artillery unit. Once the airspace is open, 1st Platoon will mount up and be flown into LZ Uplift. From there 1st Platoon will assist any friendly forces caught in the open LZ, close with Hill 440, and attempt to seize the Hill with a combined effort from 2nd Platoon, who will assault from the west.

After concluding Operation Commanche IV in December, The 1st Cavalry Division was in the process of relocating to a new area of operation in the Highlands of Song Be Province, III Corps. The 1st Cavalry was tasked with the creation of a new base camp in the region in order to begin search and destroy missions within the next month. By the end of January 1968, the 1st Cavalry Division had established a division base camp and several small fire support bases in the area. As the platoons of reconnaissance patrols were beginning to get get acquainted with the local terrain, the Tet offensive commenced in full. While recently becoming aware of the 1st Cavalry's arrival, the PAVN forces with the assistance of local NLF guerrillas, launched an assault on the Division base camp. Teams of sappers snaked quietly through the perimeter defenses and planted explosives in key locations around the camp. Once detonated, the Viet Cong suicide bombers and guerrilla's threw themselves into the foxholes and bunkers lining the perimeter in an attempt to breach and overwhelm the American defenders. Taken completely by surprise, troopers of the 1st Cavalry fought viciously throughout the night to hold the line. While the perimeter was breached in certain sectors, the holes were retaken and plugged by rear echelon volunteers. When the sun finally rose, the division's base camp laid in ruins. Several of the far flung fire support bases and listening posts had been completely over run and over half of the division's aircraft had been destroyed when several ammunition and fuel dumps had been ignited by PAVN sappers in the opening minutes of the fighting. This weekend we will play the part of a platoon of 1st Cavalry troopers assigned to man the "thin green line" along the camp's perimeter. At 1900 Hours

While only being active in the region for a short time, we've struggled to make contact with locals. The villages in the area have been empty over the past week, expect a few old men and women. Viet Cong activity has been relatively low expect we found that the MSR is regularly mined over night. At 1900 hours, one of our listening posts spotted two groups of Viet Cong moving through the open in the vicinity of Camp Sheridan. They appeared to have been following a foot path to the east, towards a village along the Da Pek River. Battalion is in the process of calling in several airstrikes on their positions. 1st Platoon will setup their defenses along the line, and then head out to get a body count.

    1. Medium disposition of PAVN regulars

      1. Well equipped regular soldiers

      2. Light - Mechanized Force

    2. Heavy disposition of Vietcong Irregulars

      1. Ill-Equipped but seasoned Guerrillas

      2. Fanatical; Threat of suicide bombers

    b. Friendly Disposition

    c. 2000s - Rules of Engagement

On order from your commander, enemy military and paramilitary forces are declared hostile and may be attacked subject to the following instructions:

    1. Positive Identification (PID) is required prior to engagement. PID is a reasonable certainty that the proposed target is a legitimate military target. If no PID, contact your next highest commander for decision.

    Notes from Commander:

    • All requests for Close Air Support/Medevac/Resupply/Insertion are to go to Mako 1-6 on FREQ 60.0. Mako 1-6 will contact Rattler 1-6 on FREQ 50.0 to request an asset to assist 1st Platoon as necessary. Once the asset is in the area of Operation for Mako 1-6, Infantry can contact the bird via CAS Net FREQ 45.0 to guide in the bird/direct close air support.
    • If an infantry element is in threat of being overrun and requires immediate assistance, they may declare a "Tactical Emergency" to Mako 1-6, who will then have Rattler 1-6 redirect all available air assets to Mako 1-6's Area of Operation to prevent the unit from being overrun.
    • Expect the enemy to utilize grenades when in close combat.

    1. SITUATION:

Following on from the presence patrol 1st Cavalry Division performed into the village of Kar Shek a large number of Taliban forces have been attacking FOB Prince relentlessly for the past week. The unit have suffered multiple casualties and KIA's. With no end in sight, SF units were called in to strike strategic locations in the area in hope that this would disrupt the Taliban's attacks. This however, has come at a cost, and an SF unit has gone missing, as well as the insertion helicopter they were in. With little intelligence as to where the unit is hopes are fading of finding them alive, their last GPS locations were from 2 days ago. Nothing has been heard from the unit since and the GPS trackers have now stopped working. Although under heavy attack the only units in the area are the 1st Cavalry Division, running low on supplies and ammunition. The British Royal Marines stationed 35KM to the North are unable to provide ground assistance as they are in the same situation.

In 2006, a US supply convoy was ambushed and destroyed on an isolated MSR running through Kamdesh, an incredibly remote area just miles from the Pakistani border. Allied Commanders identified the location and established a outlying Combat Outpost and named it after the dead commander of the convoy, Lt Keating. COP Keating was positioned in a gorge, next to a small village, river, and surrounded on all four sides by four imposing mountains, running at a 60 degree angle up from the walls of Keating. Every soldier to lay eyes on COP Keating, immediately knew that serving there would be a death sentence. For three years frustrated commanders lobbied for the COP to be abandoned due to its compromising location.

Ground resupply was completely impossible due to the loss of control of Nuristan province. Due to the altitude & height of the surrounding mountains, resupply birds could only reach Keating by flying at night through the valleys to avoid anti-aircraft fire from the insurgents who controlled the passes. Due to ground fire, bad weather in the mountain passes, Often resupply flights were turned back, and Keating was left to fend for itself undermanned, exposed, and ill-equipped for days on end. By 2008, it was decided that Keating would be abandoned on October 10th, 2009.

By October, Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 71st Cavalry Regiment, who manned Keating, were bled dry from periodic attacks and lack of resupply. They had packed the majority of the Camps supplies into large shipping containers, as they were slated to leave Keating in a week. On October 2nd, Keating's commander and a platoon of the garrison were flown to a rural town in the area to give parting advice to the Afghan elders that had worked with the coalition forces in the area, leaving Keating further undermanned. Now down to two under strength platoons and their HQ element, within the walls of Keating, American soldiers had to rely on the platoon of ANA fighters to man half of the defenses. On October 3rd, one week before US troops were to be pulled out of Keating, a battalion of Taliban fighters surrounded the camp, and launched one final massive assault in an attempt to destroy the coalition garrison at Keating. Within 45 minutes of the fighting, Taliban forces had breached the wire of Keating and set fire to the Camp. The Afghan garrison fled the camp, and the remaining American soldiers fell back to the aid station, and the mess hall preparing to make their final stand. American forces held their positions against Taliban assaults on their structures and managed to launch a series of counter attacks with only a dozen combat effective men. They managed to repel the Taliban and hold for the 7 hours that it took air support to arrive at Keating (Another 6 until QRF and Medevac finally reached the camp). Eight were killed, with another forty wounded,

    1. SITUATION:

Logar Province, Afghanistan, 2007. The Taliban/AQ have been waging low-intensity warfare against the Afghan government and its ISAF partners. Government establishments, as well as civilian centers have been the main victims of the insurgency in recent months and ISAF forces have also been regularly engaged by insurgent forces. Recently developed sources have discovered that the Taliban may be using the regional production of Opium/Cannabis to fund their insurgency operations. In order to quell the insurgency, ISAF forces must begin investigating the production of narcotics in the region and determine their legality. To do so, ISAF forces will need to establish stronger presence in these drug-producing regions. 1st Platoon's objective is to establish a foothold in the region by rebuilding two combat outposts in the Nefer River Valley, conducting a presence patrol through the valley and clearing a known IED-ridden compound, and meeting with a local village leader to discuss his village's production of narcotics.

    2. Do not engage anyone who has surrendered, or is unarmed or wounded.

Finally, 1st Platoon will meet with a local leader in the village of Kandar (OBJ Apollo) to discuss the village's production of Cannabis/Opium and its significance, then destroy the drug operation if found to be illegal.
